Paul Merson delivers his verdict on Antonio Conte's all-conquering Chelsea side

Paul Merson has played down comparisons between Antonio Conte’s Chelsea outfit and Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal Invincibles.

The Blues are sitting six points clear of their closest rivals Liverpool in the Premier League title race after a run of 11 straight top-flight victories.

The west London side eased to a 1-0 win against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park last weekend which was their eighth clean sheet during their winning run.

Chelsea need three more victories to equal Arsenal’s record of 14 consecutive wins set in 2002 as Conte’s men look to win their first Premier League crown under the Italian.

Naturally, the west London side’s exploits have been likened to Wenger’s famous Invincibles side that won the 2003-04 Premier League title without losing a game.

However, former Arsenal midfielder Merson doesn’t believe that Chelsea are in the same bracket as that Gunners side, including the likes of Thierry Henry and Patrick Vieira.

“That Arsenal team that went the whole 2003-04 season without losing was something special and while this Chelsea team are good, they are not in the same class,”

“‘The Invincibles’ could beat you in so many different ways and they could wipe the floor with you if you weren’t careful. They had world-class players all over the pitch.

“This Chelsea team are solid, well-coached and they have players producing magic moments.

“But they are not going to beat teams four or five-nil every week.

“Antonio Conte’s Chelsea are more like the Arsenal teams I played in under George Graham – they are just so solid. When Chelsea score, you can see other teams thinking: ‘That’s that then, we’re never going to score two against them’.”
