Paul Merson is backing Arsene Wenger's side to triumph in Sunday's north London derby

Paul Merson is confident Arsenal will ease to victory over Tottenham Hotspur if Arsene Wenger’s side can maintain their impressive form in the north London derby on Sunday afternoon.

The Gunners have scored seven goals in their last two games in all competitions to set them up nicely for the visit of Mauricio Pochettino’s struggling Tottenham Hotspur side.

Arsenal were 4-1 winners against the Premier League’s basement club Sunderland last weekend before Arsene Wenger’s side came from 2-0 down to beat Ludogorets 3-2 in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Tottenham, on the other hand, have failed to win their last three Premier League games following successive stalemates with West Bromwich Albion, Bournemouth and defending champions Leicester City.

The Lilywhites lost 1-0 to Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen at Wembley on Wednesday night to leave their hopes of reaching the Champions League knockout stage in doubt.

Former Arsenal midfielder Merson doesn’t believe Tottenham will be able to contain the Gunners if Wenger’s side play to their potential.

“If Tottenham play like they did in the Champions League in midweek then you can’t see anything but an Arsenal win,” Merson told Sky Sports.

“It was probably their worst-ever performance under Mauricio Pochettino. If Arsenal watched that they’ll be thinking they’ve just got to turn up and get the three points, but of course it doesn’t work like that.

“That being said, though, I’m still going to go for the Gunners to win this game. If they’re at it straight away then I don’t see Tottenham being able to live with them. Form does go out the window for a game like this but six games without a win is a lot for Spurs and their confidence doesn’t look great.”
