Mesut Ozil is much better at scoring goals in training than matches claims Wenger

Arsene Wenger believes there is more to come from Mesut Ozil in terms of goals, despite the Arsenal playmaker's improved finishing this season.

Ozil has become Arsenal's chief creator after registering 19 Premier League assists last season, but had scored just 20 goals in his previous three seasons combined in north London up until the 2016/17 campaign.

The Germany international has already scored nine in 23 appearances for Arsenal this term - the 28-year-old's best haul for the Gunners - but Wenger has called on Ozil to show fans the ruthless edge he so often displays in training sessions at the club's London Colney complex.

"He is of course a huge player," Wenger said. "I always defended him here in press conferences, because I believe that he has improved his commitment. Physically he works much harder than people think he does.

"He works hard, but I think he had one or two games this season especially where he was frustrated. The one that comes to my mind is the Man City game where he was criticised after, but overall if you look at the whole contribution in the whole season, for me he has been absolutely fantastic.

"I believe this season he has scored more goals and personally I believe as well he creates more chances for himself than ever before because he runs more behind.

"I still think there is a gap between his potential finishing and the way he finishes.
