Scorpion kick by Olivier Giroud sends Gunners third in the table

Olivier Giroud scored one of the best goals the Emirates has seen as Arsenal cruised to a 2-0 victory over Crystal Palace.

The 30-year-old striker netted his fifth goal in three Premier League starts with a stunning scorpion kick to hand Arsenal a first half advantage as Alex Iwobi added to the lead after the interval.

Arsenal’s stall was set from the off as Arsene Wenger named three centre forwards, Alexis Sanchez and Lucas Perez providing wide support for Giroud with Iwobi scheming in the number 10 role with Mesut Ozil absent through injury.

Against such attacking firepower it was all Palace could do to hold on; they should have fallen behind within just six minutes when Nacho Monreal volleyed a fizzing cross along the byline. Giroud and Lucas both dived for the ball but neither could reach.

A smattering of long range efforts kept the visitors pinned back and the opener seemed inevitable, yet the Emirates was still stunned when Giroud broke the deadlock on 17 minutes.

Lucas, who had been publicly criticised by Gabriel for his defensive application in victory over West Brom, won the ball back on the edge of the Arsenal area, starting off a move that flowed as smoothly as any of the Wenger era.
