Martin Keown thinks Jenkinson needs to follow Hector Bellerin's example

The Spanish defender has blossomed into Arsene Wenger’s first-choice right-back over the past 24 months thanks to a series of impressive performances.

The former Barcelona youngster was named in the PFA Premier League team of the year after Bellerin scored one goal and made five assists in 36 top-flight games.

Jenkinson returned from a two-year loan at West Ham United in the summer but the England Under-21 international hasn’t made a Premier League appearance this term.

Keown believes that Jenkinson could have a role to play in Arsenal’s title challenge as injuries start to mount up during the hectic festive schedule.

And the former Arsenal centre-half wants to see Jenkinson seize his chance to impress in Wenger’s first-team if the 24-year-old is given an opportunity.

“Carl Jenkinson is someone who has come in already and I think he needs to be more confident,” Keown told The Daily Mail.

“He’s been away on loan, he’s maturing and I’d like to see him play with more belief. He’s a tremendous athlete. Hector Bellerin has gone in, embraced it and believes he belongs at that level. Jenkinson needs to find that belief.

Arsene Wenger has always been very supportive of his young players. Jenkinson went on loan at West Ham and was performing better there than he was for Arsenal. It will have encouraged Wenger that he can reproduce that form for Arsenal.
