Arsene Wenger dismissed fears Alexis Sanchez could be ready to quit Arsenal this summer

Arsene Wenger dismissed fears Alexis Sanchez could be ready to quit Arsenal this summer after his negative body language at the end of Tuesday’s 3-3 draw against Bournemouth.

One report suggested the Chile international’s team-mates are concerned he may seek a move after a difficult evening on the south coast in which he was seen arguing with midfielder Aaron Ramsey before throwing his gloves onto the pitch and stormed down the tunnel at full-time.

There has been little progress despite the 28-year-old now entering the final 18 months of his deal, magnifying the importance of any on-field issues. However, Wenger insists Sanchez’s reaction after the Gunners came from 3-0 down to snatch a late equaliser was merely frustration at the concession of two points which, following Tottenham’s win over Chelsea last night, leaves Arsenal outside the top four since September.

“What is surprising there? You want to win the games and when you don’t win, you are unhappy - it is normal,” he said. “How was he in the dressing room afterwards? Alright.

“You want to see that passion. Without passion, you do not come back after 70 minutes from three goals down in the Premier League. First of all it is exceptional, it doesn’t often happen in the Premier League and you need a special response, which is what happened. We wanted to win the game, and we didn’t win the game so we are all frustrated. Of course he is fine.”

By contrast, Olivier Giroud attracted criticism for celebrating his stoppage-time leveller at the Vitality Stadium rather than immediately seeking to restart the game in search of a winner with four minutes to play against Bournemouth’s ten men.

“Of course I wanted him to get on with the game,” said Wenger. “I understand both sides, because at 3-0 down in the head of the players the game is lost, but you still want the guys to take the ball and put it in the middle of the pitch.”
